Double Interlaced Running Stitch
The double interlaced running stitch begins with a row of base stitches. You then weave two threads through those stitches to create a decorative braided line.

Definition
Double laced running stitch is a decorated running stitch. First make a straight row of evenly spaced running stitches. Then pass a second and third thread alternately over and under the foundation stitches, without piercing the fabric. Together, the threads form a braided line with more colour and relief than an ordinary running stitch. The foundation row remains visible and determines how regular the final result will be.
When to use it
Use this stitch for a border on a sampler, a decorative band on a cushion or an elegant line between two areas of embroidery. Two contrasting colours make the woven pattern clearly visible; shades from the same colour family create a calmer-looking border. The stitch is easiest to work on fabric with a clear weave, because you can follow the foundation stitches easily.
Common mistakes
A common mistake is pulling the laced thread too tightly. This bends the foundation row and makes the airy woven effect disappear. An uneven first row also remains visible in every subsequent step. Do not pierce the foundation thread with the needle, and do not always pass the thread on the same side; alternating over and under creates the characteristic rhythm.
Practical tips
Finish the foundation row completely first and use a blunt needle for the laced section. This makes it less likely that you will split the embroidery thread. Leave enough thread at both ends to finish off neatly. After every few stitches, use your needle to lay the second laced thread flat. First practise on a short line and count the stitches, so that both weaving threads follow the same pattern.
