Definition
The cable chain stitch is a variation of chain stitch in which each new loop gains an extra twist or crossing. The loops therefore do not merely join like an ordinary chain; together they form a clearly twisted line. The result resembles a small cord or cable. The stitch has more relief than ordinary chain stitch and naturally attracts attention, even when worked in the same colour as the rest of the embroidery.
When to use it
Use this stitch for elegant outlines, flower stems, frame lines, monograms and decorative borders. It is particularly beautiful when the line itself is an important part of the design. A contrasting colour makes the twists especially visible; slightly thicker thread creates a rich, cord-like effect. For very small letters, tiny curves or fine drawings, ordinary chain stitch is usually easier to control.
Common mistakes
The cable shape disappears if you twist the loops in a different direction each time. Choose one consistent working direction and repeat it throughout. Pulling too tightly makes the links narrow and stiff; working too loosely can create large, limp loops. Another mistake is placing the needle outside the previous loop. This breaks the continuous line. Also pay attention to stitch length, as greatly varying lengths make the cable rhythm unsettled.
Practical tips
First practise a straight line on a scrap of fabric and draw a light guideline beneath it. Make the first loops slightly larger than you think you need, because the twist takes up space. Keep the working thread on the same side of the needle and only pull once the loop is lying neatly round. Use an embroidery hoop for even tension. After a few stitches, check whether the cable remains the same width and calmly correct the line if necessary.
