Soluvlies is a water-soluble stabiliser that you use temporarily on or under your fabric. You can draw an embroidery motif on it, tack or attach it to the fabric and then embroider through it. Afterwards, dissolve the stabiliser with water so that only your embroidery remains.
The name is often used for a water-soluble stabiliser in a sheet form. Always check the packaging, because not every water-soluble product works in exactly the same way.
What do you use Soluvlies for?
Soluvlies is particularly useful with dark fabric, stretchy fabric, fluffy fabric, towelling and fabrics on which drawing is difficult. You can also use it when you do not want to transfer a pattern directly onto the fabric.
How do you use it neatly?
- Draw or print your motif on the stabiliser if the material is suitable for this.
- Place the stabiliser smoothly on the fabric, without creases.
- Embroider calmly through both the stabiliser and the fabric.
- Rinse the work afterwards according to the instructions.
- Leave the work to dry flat so that the fabric keeps its shape nicely.
Common mistakes
Do not use too little water when rinsing. Residue can make the fabric feel stiff. Always test on a scrap of fabric if you are working with hand-dyed thread, silk, wool or a fabric that is sensitive to moisture.
When should you choose something else?
If you want a firm counted grid for cross stitch on clothing, wash-away canvas may sometimes be a better choice. If you only want to reinforce fabric, iron-on interfacing or a tear-away stabiliser may be more logical.
