A large-eye needle is an embroidery needle with a wider eye than an ordinary needle. This makes it easier to thread thicker thread, multiple strands, wool, ribbon or metallic thread.
When should you choose a large eye?
Choose a large-eye needle if your thread frays while threading, if you are using multiple strands of stranded cotton or when the thread becomes visibly damaged during embroidery.
Which types often have a large eye?
Chenille needles, tapestry needles, some embroidery needles and ribbon needles often have a wider eye. The main difference is the point: blunt for evenweave fabric, sharp for tightly woven fabric.
What should you look out for?
- The eye must be large enough for the thread.
- The needle itself must not be too thick for the fabric.
- For evenweave fabric, you usually choose a blunt point.
- For ordinary cotton fabric, you usually choose a sharp point.
Common mistake
Looking only at the eye. A large eye is useful, but the point and thickness must also suit your fabric. Otherwise, you may distort the fabric or have to push too hard.
